Time Series and Forecasting Basics

Recognize temporal patterns, compare simple forecasts and evaluate predictions without future-data leakage.

The idea

Time series observations have an order and frequency. A trend is a longer-term movement, seasonality repeats at a meaningful interval and noise includes irregular variation. Missing dates are not automatically zero activity. Record reporting changes or events that could create apparent patterns.

Worked example

A fictional shop has higher sales each Saturday. That weekly pattern differs from sales increasing steadily across months. A missing Tuesday report should be marked missing rather than replaced with zero and mistaken for a collapse in demand.

Try it

Draw fourteen daily observations with a repeated weekend pattern and one missing day. Label the frequency and distinguish a possible trend from the repeated pattern. State what additional history would help you evaluate whether the pattern is reliable.
